that's a good topic of discussion but as a question, it's just opinion-based. How can we answer objectively ? Is it better to eat a steak or to wear leather shoes? What veganism is about is animal cruelty. We cannot measure cruelty and compare one cruelty with another. When making an ethical compromise, only you can draw the line. You can consider many things: number of individuals, degree of consciousness, duration of the suffering, if the species is endangered or easily renewable, quantity of pollution created...
your logic is correct and this type of question would also arise for example when dumpster diving, or any time a plate is offered (as opposed to cooking or buying yourself), or second-hand leather. each person has a different "moral code", for example one could say "i will eat it since its gonna go to waste otherwise" while another person would say "i will not eat it because i will feel guilty later and have karmic repercussions or be disgusted". You only have to follow your own moral code, do what feels right to you, there is no vegan police or vegan law, so you decide where you put the line.
Fruits would also fertilize the ground and feed little animals if we didn't steal them. It's absurd to think vegans have a moral higher-ground in such matter. Burning wood is also not exactly environment-friendly, not more than dung. Humans consume nature, the same as all other creatures, you cannot avoid it.
