May 1, 2017 at 17:35 comment added Nobody There is considerable difference between what Article 9 directly says and the statement the Vegan Society makes. Sure, I would like to argue that the vegan society is right, but some people would disagree (see example in question). Unless there is a court case supporting that claim, it's not worth the paper is written on (or the energy needed to transmit the information). So I agree with @ChrisW and go even further than him in my opinion.
Apr 15, 2017 at 8:48 comment added cellu There's an activist group promoting support for vegan prisoners in the UK: the Vegan Prisoners Support Group (VPSG). They state that "prisoners who have chosen a vegan way of life must be issued with a suitable vegan diet. Provided that the Governor is satisfied that the grounds are genuine, and subject to the policy and guidance contained in PSI 44/2010, together with the Directory and Guide on Religious Practices in NOMS, the normal diet may be varied accordingly."
Apr 7, 2017 at 11:11 comment added Zanna A close friend of mine who tries to eat vegan was briefly incarcerated in the UK and he said there was a process for requesting vegan food, but it took a long time to process and provision was patchy @ChrisW
Apr 7, 2017 at 11:07 comment added ChrisW If I were skeptical I would want another source other than the vegan society's saying that (i.e. for their interpretation that the article has that effect): for example, evidence that vegan meals are made available on request in prison in France or Italy; or a court ruling or something like that. I accept it's likely to be de facto true in England.
