On Stack Exchange, we believe the core moderators should come from the community, and be elected by the community itself through popular vote. We hold regular elections to determine who these community moderators will be.

Community moderators are accorded the highest level of privilege on our community, and should themselves be exemplars of positive behavior and leaders within the community.

Our general criteria for moderators is as follows:

  • patient and fair
  • leads by example
  • shows respect for their fellow community members in their actions and words
  • open to some light but firm moderation to keep the community on track and resolve (hopefully) uncommon disputes and exceptions

Full elections have three phases and an optional fourth phase (Primary):

  1. Question Collection
  2. Nomination
  3. Primary
  4. Election

Please participate in the moderator elections by voting, and perhaps even by nominating yourself to be a community moderator!

I believe that Vegetarianism.SE fills an important niche as an FAQ site for newcomers to vegan and vegetarian lifestyles. These people tend to have similar questions, and they are seeking answers that earn more trust than a typical forum post. This is the mindset that I would bring as a moderator.

I've been a member of Stack Exchange since 2009 and a moderator of Sustainability for 1 year. I've asked 61 questions and written 84 answers here on Vegetarianism.SE. I have a long-term interest in folksonomy and I've applied that interest here to improve our tagging system.

However, my visits to this site are often weeks apart, and I'd rather see moderators get elected who can give this site more frequent attention. Despite not being a perfect candidate, I nominate myself because I believe in public elections and in this site.

So I've mostly just been a lurker here in the Veganism & Vegetarianism SE site. I mostly use StackExchange for my work, primarily using Stack Overflow and the WordPress Development SE sites. I'd like to become more active here, and find a way to help give back to the community here. On StackOverflow I do a good bit of Triage and First Post reviews to help improve the quality of that site.

I feel like this site could become an invaluable resource/asset to the community, and would like the opportunity to help foster that community.

  • I've been a member of Stack Exchange since 2015, and a member of this specific group since it's start.

  • I've been vegan since 2015

  • I've moderated multiple message boards in the past. While I've never been an SE moderator, I'm a fast learner

I have been hesitating to nominate myself for this election because even though I've been here since the beginning, I've never felt certain about the fine details of the scope of the site. In the last couple of years we have received a flow of questions slow enough that I'm often unsure whether one or another of them should be closed as opinion-based or needing focus, and there usually aren't many folks on meta or in chat to discuss that kind of thing with. I really want this to be a great resource - a place for everyone to find accurate information and insights about vegetarianism and veganism, and I think we have done pretty well so far, but I would feel so much happier with a bigger and more active community to engage and collaborate with.

Anyway, I've come to the conclusion that I probably understand the aims and scope of the site as well as anyone and I'd be happy to work to keep the site going smoothly, and hopefully to improve it, alongside our existing mods and community, present and future.

Possibly relevant credentials:

  • cook and vegetarian since 1998

  • vegan since 2013

  • Stack Exchange denizen since 2016

This election is over.
